I have been at my current entry-level position for about two years now, and I am actively looking for advancement opportunities within and outside the company. I have a LinkedIn account but it is very basic and doesn’t get much attention. My question is how important is establishing an online presence when looking for a job/career advancement opportunities?

Hi Tyler –

Good Question!  Important Question!  Easy Answer.

Establishing an online presence and managing your online brand is very important when looking for a job or other opportunities to advance your career!

A while back, I wrote a blog post on this topic:

You are what you post . . . . on social media!

Also, the Harvard Business Review Blog has featured a number of articles on this same topic, including the following:

It’s not a job search, it’s a permanent campaign!

Managing Yourself: What’s Your Personal Social Media Strategy?

In a nutshell, the picture you paint of yourself on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. goes a long way toward defining your identity (your brand!) in the eyes of your boss, peers, partners and subordinates and your potential bosses, peers partners and subordinates.  Your online brand say a lot about your decision-making and maturity; about how you will represent a company’s brand if they hire or promote you.

Manage your online brand carefully, whether you are looking for a job or not.  Sometimes opportunities find you when you are not looking for them. When someone finds you online, you want to be proud of what they find!

Good luck,
